The Lagos city Five million challenge is one of the activities planned for the celebration of the Earth Festival Nigeria 2020, a week-long event put together by Humanity Nigeria that will hold from September 22-27, 2020.
Activities around this festival will be centered around achieving the goal of raising awareness about the need to protect the earth and save the environment from pollution and abuse.
In this maiden edition, the team has identified one major area to focus on, which is the pollution caused by plastic bottle wastes.
A whopping 91% of plastic does not get recycled according to www.nationalgeographic.com, since of the 8.3 billion metric tons produced, 6.3 billion metric tons become plastic waste, and report has it that 80 percent of plastic water bottles end up in landfills and it takes up to 1,000 years for every single bottle to decompose.
Also, 80 percent of the plastic water bottles we buy end up in landfills when they can be recycled.
So, the challenge is simply to put together a team of volunteers called the Earth Ambassadors, to rid the country of as much plastic bottle wastes as possible in a short period of time, while ensuring that they go for recycling.
1 Million Attempt (Stage 1)
